Car wrap film quality — why good film costs more

You ask about wrapping or paint protection film for your car, you get two quotes — and one is much cheaper than the other. For the same "full car wrap". Where does the difference come from, when the result in the photos looks similar? The answer almost always comes down to one thing: the car wrap film quality a given studio works with. The material looks the same on installation day, but what happens to it over the following months and years can be a completely different story.

In this post we explain, with no sales talk, how good film differs from cheap film, how to tell one from the other — and why only Hexis film goes on cars in our studio, even if that means a higher price for the service.

Not every film is the same film

The quality range on the car film market is enormous. On one side you have reputable manufacturers, on the other — nameless, cheap films, often imported at the lowest possible cost. They look similar on the roll, but in practice they differ in the properties that decide how your car will look a year or two from now.

The most common problems with cheap films are:

• Yellowing and colour shift in the sun — after a few seasons the film can drift into a different shade, especially on the bonnet and roof, where UV works hardest.
• Poor stretchability — it conforms badly to curves, bumpers and mirrors, so wrinkles come easier and the film likes to lift on the edges.
• Bad adhesive — it can leave residue on removal or, the other way round, let go prematurely.
• Shorter lifespan — micro-cracks, hazing and loss of gloss show up much sooner.

With paint protection films (PPF) there is one more thing: cheap film handles stone chips worse and recovers slowly — or not at all — from light scratches. And that is the whole point of getting PPF in the first place.

Car wrap film quality — how to recognise it

As a car owner you do not need to know film chemistry to judge what you are dealing with. A few things are enough:

• Brand and manufacturer. A good studio will tell you straight out which film it uses. If all you hear is a vague "good film" with no name — that is a warning sign.
• Behaviour on curves. High-grade film has so-called shape memory and better stretch, so it sits nicely on curves without being forced.
• Resistance to sun and time. Ask how the film looks after years — colour, gloss, no yellowing.
• The studio's honesty. A workshop that invests in quality has nothing to hide and will gladly explain the differences. A lack of specifics usually means savings on the material.

Keep in mind that film is only half the story. The other half is the installer's hand — even the best film badly applied will not give a good result. Both the material and the experience count.

Cheap film can look identical on installation day — the difference shows up months later, in the sun, at the car wash and in the frost.

Why we only use Hexis
