Window tinting and the law — what is allowed in Poland?

Thinking about tinting your car windows, but worried about fines, a confiscated registration certificate or trouble at the periodic inspection? Good instinct — window tinting regulations in Poland are clear, and getting them wrong can be expensive. The good news: a few simple rules are all you need to get exactly the look you want, fully legally.

Below we explain which windows can be tinted and how dark, what happens if you overdo the front — and how it works in practice, using a Ford Mustang that recently left our studio as an example.

Which windows can be tinted — and how dark

Polish regulations (the Minister of Infrastructure's regulation on technical conditions of vehicles) look at car glass in a very simple way: what matters is the light transmittance — the percentage of light that passes through the glass together with the applied film.

• Windscreen — must let through at least 75% of light. In practice this means: no tinting film across its surface.
• Front side windows — at least 70% transmittance. Factory glass already absorbs some light on its own, so there is only room for a very light film.
• Rear side windows and the rear window — no restrictions. You can go almost black, because rear visibility is covered by the mandatory exterior mirrors on both sides of the car.

This asymmetry is no accident. The driver watches the road through the front windows, and other road users (including a police officer during a stop) need to see what is happening inside the cabin. The rear of the car is passenger and luggage territory — there the law leaves full freedom.

What you risk with a front end that is too dark

If your front windows let through less light than the regulations require, the consequences can sting:

• a fine — from 20 to 500 zł,
• confiscation of the registration certificate — the car no longer meets technical requirements, so the officer can withhold the document and send you for a technical inspection,
• trouble at the periodic inspection — the inspector can refuse to pass the car until the film is gone.

Police carry devices that measure light transmittance on the spot, so "it looks light enough to me" is not an argument. It is also worth knowing that a proper film should be type-approved — during a roadside check you can show the certificate of conformity for the film used.

The rule is simple: tint the rear of the car as dark as you like — the front has to stay within the light transmittance limits.

How it works in practice — a Ford Mustang in our studio

We recently tinted a full set of windows on a Ford Mustang, and it is a textbook example of combining looks with the law. The rear windows got Hexis Majestik 20 — clearly tinted, which pulls the car's silhouette together, adds privacy and cuts down heat build-up in the cabin. The front side windows were finished with a film whose light transmittance meets the legal limits — the car is fully road-legal, and the difference in shade between front and rear is far less noticeable than you might expect.
