How to remove a car wrap without damaging the paint

Film on a car is not forever — and it is not meant to be. Sooner or later there comes a time to take it off: it has aged, the car is going up for sale, or you simply want a new colour. That is when the question comes up: how to remove a car wrap so that what you find underneath is clean paint, not adhesive residue and discolouration?

Below we explain when it is worth removing the film, what can go wrong when it is done in a hurry and how we handle it in our studio — whether it is PPF paint protection film, a colour change wrap or graphics on a company car.

When it is time to remove the film

Well-applied film lasts for years, but every film ages in the sun, rain and frost. Signs that it is time:

• the film turns yellow or goes dull — especially on horizontal panels such as the bonnet and roof,
• cracks appear, or a fine web of lines across the surface,
• the edges start to lift and dirt collects underneath,
• the car is being sold or a lease is ending and the factory look has to come back,
• you want a new colour or a different film — the old one has to come off first.

There is one more, less obvious reason: film applied elsewhere, with bubbles or visible edges. We remove that too and redo the job properly.

How to remove a car wrap — and why not by force

In videos it looks easy: grab a corner and pull. With fresh film on sound paint, sometimes it really is that simple. The trouble is that the film you want to remove is usually no longer fresh — and that is where it gets difficult:

• old film breaks into small pieces instead of coming off in one sheet, so a quick job turns into picking it off inch by inch,
• the adhesive stays on the paint — and it is the adhesive, not the film itself, that is often the biggest problem,
• sharp tools and harsh chemicals scratch the paint — a scraper or the wrong solvent can do more harm than years of driving under the film,
• paint after bodywork repairs is weaker — on panels that have been resprayed, the film can take part of the paint with it.

The longer worn film stays on the car, the harder it is to remove — and the more work the paint needs afterwards.

That is why doing it yourself makes sense, at most, on a small panel with fresh film. For a whole car, old film or repaired paint, it is better left to someone who does it every day.

How we remove film in the studio

With us it always follows the same steps, whatever the type of film:

1. Inspection. We check what film it is, what condition it is in and whether the paint underneath has ever been repaired. This sets the pace of the work — and tells us whether to warn you about any risk.
2. Removal with heat. We warm the film and peel it off slowly at the right angle. Heat softens the adhesive, so the film comes off in larger pieces and pulls less on the paint.
3. Removing adhesive residue. We clean the bodywork with paint-safe products, without scraping.
4. Collection or the next step. You collect the car with clean paint, or we move straight on to whatever comes next.

What to do with the paint afterwards

Paint that has spent years under film can be dull or differ in shade from the areas that were not wrapped. That is normal — some surfaces were exposed to the sun while others were covered. The good news: it can usually be evened out.

• Paint correction restores gloss and evens out the surface.
• Ceramic coating protects the refreshed paint for the long term.
• New PPF protects it from stone chips — and this time you can also choose a coloured version.
• Colour change — if removing the old film is only the start of a transformation.
