Ceramic Coating Maintenance — How to Care for Your Car After Application

A ceramic coating is an investment in your paint's looks and protection — but it doesn't work on an "apply and forget" basis. How long the hydrophobic effect, deep gloss, and easier washing last depends largely on how you look after your car afterwards. That's exactly why ceramic coating maintenance matters just as much as the application itself.

The good news: it isn't complicated and doesn't require expensive products. A few rules and a bit of consistency are enough. Below we walk through them one by one — no spin, the same way we explain it to customers when they pick up their car.

The First Few Days After Application — Let the Coating Cure

A freshly applied coating needs time to cure and properly bond with the paint. During this period it's at its most vulnerable, so in the first few days after application it's worth:

• avoiding washing the car, especially with chemical products,
• keeping the car out of the rain if possible (water carrying contaminants can leave marks),
• not parking under trees (sap, bird droppings) or in dusty spots.

The exact curing time depends on the specific product and conditions — we'll tell you at pickup, along with a few simple pointers to start with. The more gently you treat the coating at first, the better it pays off later.

Washing Your Car — The Basics of Ceramic Coating Maintenance

The biggest myth out there: "a car with ceramic coating doesn't need washing." Not true. The coating means dirt sticks less and grime comes off more easily — but you still need to wash it. What changes is how you do it:

• Use the two-bucket method — one bucket with clean water and shampoo, the other for rinsing the wash mitt. This stops you rubbing sand back into the paint.
• Use a gentle, pH-neutral car shampoo — avoid harsh, strongly alkaline or acidic products, which shorten the coating's lifespan.
• Use a soft microfibre wash mitt, not rough sponges or brushes.
• Dry the car with a soft microfibre towel or a water blade — don't let droplets dry off on their own in the sun (they leave water spots).
• Wash in the shade, on a cool body — not in direct sunlight.

Regular, gentle washing does more good than a rare, "thorough" scrub once a quarter.

A ceramic coating doesn't mean you can skip washing — it changes how you wash: less scrubbing, more gentleness.

What to Avoid After Ceramic Coating

A few things can shorten the coating's life faster than you'd think:

• Automatic car washes with brushes — the spinning brushes leave micro-scratches and wear the coating down. If you do use a car wash, make it a touchless one with a sensible programme.
• Aggressive chemicals and "strong" degreasers used regularly across the whole body.
• Leaving contaminants on the paint — bird droppings, insects, and sap act like acid. The longer they sit, the greater the risk of a permanent mark — remove them as soon as you can, softening them gently with water first.
• Rough cloths and paper towels — a sure way to cause scratches.

Also keep in mind that a ceramic coating protects the surface, but it isn't armour — it won't protect the paint from stone chips. If you want mechanical protection for the most exposed parts, that's a job for PPF film (we cover this in our post ceramic coating vs PPF).

How Long the Effect Lasts and How to Refresh It

Hydrophobicity and gloss don't disappear overnight, but they do fade gradually with use and repeated washing. That's normal, and it doesn't mean the coating has "stopped working."

To help the effect last longer:

• wash the car regularly and gently (see above),
• after washing, you can boost the coating with a refreshing product (a so-called booster) that tops up hydrophobicity,
• from time to time it's worth bringing the car in so we can assess the coating's condition and tell you whether a refresh is enough or it's time to think about reapplying.

How often? That depends on how and where you drive and how you store the car. Rather than guess — bring it in and we'll take a look.
